British Columbia introduces mandatory registration for hiring foreign workers

Employers in British Columbia who wish to hire foreign workers may soon be required to register with the provincial government in addition to obtaining an LMIA from the federal government. According to the Western Labour Agriculture Initiative, beginning December 15, 2020, the registration will become mandatory. Employers will be able to register online. This policy follows the mandatory requirement for recruiters to be licensed in BC. The new policy applies to employers hiring foreign workers in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), Seasonal Agriculture Worker Program (SAWP), Home Child Care Provider or Home Support Worker pilots, and all other LMIA-required programs. The registration certificates will be valid for three years.
