British will need an LMIA to work in Canada until the Canada-UK TCA is ratified

On December 29, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published an update regarding the temporary processing of work permits instructions for citizens of the United Kingdom. Earlier, British nationals were subjects to the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and were exempt from obtaining LMIA. Following Brexit, Canada and the United Kingdom has signed the Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-UK TCA) which will exempt British nationals from LMIA requirement once the agreement is ratified by the Parliament. Beginning January 1, 2021, citizens of the UK will have to get LMIA to apply for a work permit. Applications received on and before December 31, 2020, will be processed under the CETA or apply for a work permit under other exemption codes.
