Canada welcomed 128,400 immigrants in 2020
Canada welcomed 11,315 new immigrants in August this year, and 13,645 in July. The number of new immigrants welcomed in August this year was significantly less than the 31,600 immigrants it welcomed in the same period last year. Prior to the pandemic, the federal government was targeting the arrival of 341,000 new immigrants in 2020. Between January and August of 2020, Canada welcomed 128,400 immigrants. Based on current trends, it appears Canada’s permanent resident intake will fall short of 200,000 immigrants this year for the first time since 1999.
