Canada welcomes the 300,000 Canadians currently living in Hong Kong to return to Canada

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said that Canada welcomes the 300,000 Canadians currently living in Hong Kong to return to Canada. She did not commit to bringing in any specific amount of asylum seekers from Hong Kong, but she emphasized that Canada welcomes immigrants and asylum seekers from around the world. On Wednesday in the House of Commons, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino agreed with the aforementioned remarks from Freeland, saying that Hong Kong-Canadians have the right to return to Canada, but they must comply with the Canadian government’s travel and health-related restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On Wednesday at a COVID-19 committee, Global Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne was asked whether Canada has contingency plans in place to support its own citizens in Hong Kong. Minster Champagne replied that the federal government will be prepared like it was in Wuhan and that Ottawa can deploy teams to carry out the contingency plans.
