Federal government to change the interpretation of ‘parent’ in passing the citizenship

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have announced a change in the interpretation of the ‘parent’ section under the Citizenship Act. The new definition will allow non-biological parents who are Canadian citizens to pass down citizenship to their foreign-born children in the first generation. This change eases the acquirement of citizenship for babies born from surrogate mothers. Earlier Canadian families who experienced fertility issues, including the LGBT couples had to adopt and sponsor their kids first.
