Half of the permanent residents admitted between 2005 and 2015 became Canadian citizens

According to the Evaluation of the Citizenship Program report by the Research and Evaluation Branch of the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), between 2005 and 2015, Canada admitted 2,826,300 permanent residents. Around 50% of them have successfully passed through the naturalization process, i.e. obtained Canadian citizenship by December 31, 2018. In addition, another 7% had applied for citizenship but have not received it by the end of 2018. To become citizens, permanent residents must pass the citizenship test and meet other eligibility criteria. Citizenship allows new Canadians to vote and hold public office.
