International students from India and China received more than half of the Study Permits in 2020

Canadian campuses become more Asian. According to the final data for 2020 by IRCC, India and China supplied more than half of all international students to Canada – 54.2%. Every third international student arrived from India. Every fifth student came from China. South Korea became the third biggest country of origin for international students. In the top-15 nations sending most of the students, nine are Asian countries. The only European country in the top-15 is France and most of them come to Quebec. The list of top-15 countries includes:

  1. India – 81,235 (31.6%)
  2. China – 58,200 (22.6%)
  3. South Korea – 10,980 (4.3%)
  4. Vietnam – 9,405 (3.7%)
  5. France – 8,005 (3.1%)
  6. Iran – 7,010 (2.7%)
  7. Brazil – 6,060 (2.4%)
  8. Nigeria – 5,895 (2.3%)
  9. Philippines – 4,370 (1.7%)
  10. United States of America – 4,315 (1.7%)
  11. Mexico – 3,675 (1.4%)
  12. Japan – 3,510 (1.4%)
  13. Bangladesh – 3,180 (1.2%)
  14. Colombia – 3,035 (1.2%)
  15. Hong Kong – 2,620 (1.0%)

In total, Canada issued 257,360 study permits in 2020. In January 2021, IRCC already issued 27,690 study permits.
