International students with expired PGWP can apply for an Open Work Permit

On January 8, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced temporary police enabling international students whose Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) has been expired or is going to expire, to apply for an open work permit for a duration of 18 months. This policy is aimed at helping those international students who invested time in the study in Canada but were not able to secure enough Canadian work experience to apply for permanent residence in Canada amid the pandemic. To be eligible for the new policy, candidates must reside in Canada, possess a legal status in Canada or apply for status restoration, have PGWP that expired on or after January 30, 2020, or a PGWP that expires in 4 months or less from the date they apply. IRCC will open the applications from January 27 to July 27, 2021.
