Number of newcomers in Vancouver drops by 63%

On July 17, the immigration data released by the Canadian government showed that in May 2020, the number of new immigrants landing in Toronto was 3,630, a decrease of 69% compared to May 2019. On the other hand, in the same period, the number of new immigrants landing in Vancouver was 1,430 and in Montreal was 1,215, a decrease of 63% compared to May 2019. Although the numbers are very horrifying, the IRCC stated that the data for May 2020 was much better than in April. For example, the number of new immigrants landing in Vancouver in April 2020 dropped by 91.1% compared to April 2019. About half of Vancouver’s population was born outside of Canada, and people who do not speak English at home account for about 30% of the total population. Therefore, Vancouver itself is an economy highly dependent on new immigrants to import capital and labour. As of May 2020, Canada welcomed only 84,000 newcomers.
