Re-opening of the US-Canada border may be postponed

The agreement about the US-Canada border closure to non-essential travel is expiring in the coming week. Ontario and British Columbia want the border to remain closed. Deputy Prime Minister Freeland said Canada’s priority in negotiations with Washington is the health of Canadians. She said that they are taking a very cautious approach to the health and safety of Canadians and that a very collaborative discussion is happening. Prime Minister Trudeau said they are going to be very careful about re-opening any international travel, including with the US before they feel it is time. Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said we need to see what happens when we lift the domestic public health measures before we can look at the international border easing up.
