Refugees may not apply for AINP or NLPNP

On October 26, 2020, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador published an update regarding the eligibility of refugee claimants to apply for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) and Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP). The government clarified that possession of a study permit or work permit in the case of a refugee claimant does not mean possession of temporary residence status. Therefore, it makes in-Canada refugee claimants ineligible for AIPP and NLPNP. Refugee claimants whose claims have been approved can apply for Permanent Residence as protected persons.
