Spouses of international students may need to apply for a work permit extension International students can be eligible to bring their spouses to Canada. In such cases, spouses of the students are eligible for an open work permit for a period of the study of the students. A lot of international students have completed their study programs in March or April. Students applying for a Post Graduate Work Permit need to meet certain eligibility criteria including a skilled job under the NOC 0, A or B job group in order for their spouses to get a new open work permit. Those of them who have been laid off and who did not apply for the PGWP must ensure they extend their legal status accordingly. Spouses of the students who currently don’t work may require changing their status to a visitor to stay within Canada.
