The number of refugee claims keeps rising

The number of refugee claims submitted in Canada continues to slightly increase despite the travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19. According to the recent data by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), there were about 1,500 cases submitted in June compared to about 1,400 filed in the previous month. Since April most refugee claims were filed at marine ports. However, it is reported about asylum claims filed in airports, for the first time since the comprehensive travel restrictions were applied by the government. In addition, the RCMP reported about stopping 32 border violators in June, a slight increase compared to May, when there were 21 such cases. Currently, Canada is turning back those who show up at unmarked border crossings, one of several measures being taken at the border in response to the pandemic.
