There has been a decrease in the number of the marriage of convenience investigations

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said that the number of spousal sponsorship applications it has received has increased by 32% over the last 10 years, but there has been a decrease in the number of marriages of convenience investigations since the probationary period was removed in April 2017. In 2019, IRCC investigated about 200 cases compared to almost 800 in 2017. At the same, the number of cases based on suspicion of marriages of convenience did not change since 2017 with over 1,700 refusals in 2019. This document dated back to February 27, 2020. IRCC stated that the first line of defence for marriage fraud cases are immigration officers. Immigration officers have been professionally trained to evaluate the sponsor and applicants’ relationship and review the evidence provided by the applicant. IRCC also works with CBSA partners to reveal, investigate and handle individuals who violate Canadian immigration laws.
