Why do Canadian farms need thousands of temporary foreign workers?

Farms across Canada recruit a large number of temporary workers from foreign countries every year. Year after year, these foreign workers fly from Latin America and the Caribbean at the beginning of spring and return home after the autumn harvest. There is no doubt that Canadian agricultural production is heavily dependent on foreign workers. Their failure to arrive on time due to the pandemic this spring caused trouble for farms and the Canadian food supply. The Canadian government has established foreign labour projects since the 1970s. The COVID-19 outbreak hit many farms in Ontario and Quebec. almost 1,000 temporary farmworkers have been infected, and three have died. The shortage of agricultural workers is more than 50,000. The government is looking for additional ways to help farmers.
